Usborne - See Under the Ground
PRODUCT: Usborne - See Under the Ground (www.usborne.com)
DESCRIPTION: A 16-page hardback flap book from Usborne Books which introduces young children to the world beneath our feet. Includes over 75 flaps. Written by Alex Frith and illustrated by Colin King.
GOOD POINTS: This is a fantastic interactive fact-filled book from the Usborne 'See inside' range. Aimed at school-aged children, this book takes them on a 'journey to the centre of the earth', teaching them everything they could want to know about what lies under the ground!
The book has a good quality hardback cover and thick board pages. It details a number of topics relating to the world beneath our feet, including the earth's core and crust, underground pipes and cables, tunnels and trains, plants and animals, stalagmites and fossils. There are nine sections in total as follows:
-
The big picture
-
Beneath your street
-
Under the city
-
Grubs and shrubs
-
Animal underworld
-
Creepy caves
-
Magna rising
-
Digging up the past
-
How deep?
Each of the topics is described in a fun and uncomplicated way, with loads of short fascinating facts and explanations which are easy for young children to understand (and even read themselves), and the pages are packed full of wonderfully detailed colour illustrations and diagrams, complete with picture labels, to reinforce learning. The best feature of the book is the amazing number of embedded flaps found on each page, which your child will have great fun opening to reveal further facts and pictures hidden inside!
In our opinion, this really is one in a great range of factual books, with simple text, fantastic attention to detail and much to see and explore on each page... educational, informative and great fun!
BAD POINTS: The flaps may not withstand lots of rough or repeated handling, particularly by younger children.
