John Adams Rubik's Cube
PRODUCT: John Adams Rubik's Cube (www.johnadams.co.uk)
DESCRIPTION: A classic 1-player multi-dimensional mechanical puzzle, in the shape of a 3x3 cube, which needs to be twisted and turned until every side has one solid colour. Includes a Rubik's cube stand. Cube dimensions are 5.5cm3. Suitable for children aged 8 years upwards.
GOOD POINTS: If you're longing for a hit of nostalgia, then look no further than the original Rubik's Cube...probably the most famous (and addictively frustrating!) hand-held puzzle that's every existed! Since its arrival in 1980, several variations of the cube have been introduced, but the original Rubik's Cube remains largely unchanged, and is a definite must-have for any puzzle lover out there.
For those who know nothing about the classic Rubik's Cube, it is a 6-sided cube-shaped toy made up of 27 smaller cubes arranged in a 3x3 design. These individual cube pieces have different coloured stickers on their faces (there are six bright colours in total), and the idea of the puzzle is to twist and turn the different rows/coloumns of the cube (individual cubes cannot be moved) in varying combinations so that each of its sides has one block colour. Sounds easy doesn't it, but don't be fooled as there are a mind-blowing number of possible moves (43 quintillion combinations to be exact), and only one solution!
The Rubik's Cube comes completed on purchase and needs jumbling up prior to use (no cheating please!). It also includes a small black rectangular plastic stand on which to store and display it. The cube is designed as a one-player game, although its addictive nature will have the whole family hooked in no time. Even once your child has mastered the Rubik's Cube challenge, they can compete with friends against the clock to see who can be the first to finish it.
For kids (and parents) out there with lots of patience and a good attention span, the Rubik's Cube will have them 'cubing' for literally hours, and is great for mental workouts, problem solving and dexterity. If you need a little help, then the Rubik's website is great and has a dedicated 'solving centre' page containing a solving video and guide.
BAD POINTS: The stickers are well stuck on, but there is a risk with intensive use that they may start to peel off. The cube may be slightly stiff to work when first purchased, but will loosen up with use.
