PRODUCT: Outwell Fusion 400 Tent (www.outwell.com)Outwell Fusion 400 Tent

DESCRIPTION: From the Outwell Smart Tunnel Range, the Fusion 400 is a two room, pop-up tunnel tent capable of sleeping up to four occupants. Features include fixed ground sheet, extended porch with two large windows, pre-attached inner tent, fully seam-sealed Outtex 4000 flysheet, pre-attached luminous guylines, heavy-duty zips, and compact pack size. Dimensions of pitched tent: approx. 260cm x 380cm x 145cm; dimensions of packed size: diameter 110cm x 2cm; weight approx. 6.5kg.

PITCHING: The Outwell Fusion 400 is incredibly easy to pitch, simply by removing the tent from its case to allow it to pop up into position, and then pegging out using the included pegs. Packing away, whilst still easy, is more complicated and requires a practiced folding technique that, once mastered, allows the tent to be packed away in minutes.

GOOD POINTS: The Fusion 400 is an incredibly well designed tent, as evidenced by the small pack size and the incredibly easy pitching system, making it ideal for short trips with the family (or just with Dad!). Pitching and packing away can be done quickly by one individual, making it ideal for families with younger children who don’t have the patience for long waits whilst parents wrestle larger tents to the ground! The attached guylines are luminous meaning less tripping up for kids and parents alike, and the zips for the front door look and feel strong enough to last for a long time (regardless of the attention they receive from the kids).

The tent has two separate rooms, a porch area and a sleeping area, with a fixed sewn-in groundsheet as well as a heavy duty Outtex 4000 flysheet for protection from the elements, with taped seams throughout. The porch area is accessed through the main door (which has a waterproof zip), and has two adjustable vents for airflow, two windows with curtains, and a surprisingly large space for gear.

Inside, through a zipped door, the inner tent sleeping area is accessible, which is permanently fixed within the tent. The inner tent itself is made from breathable polyester, allowing for plenty of ventilation, and has a couple of small pockets for housing important small pieces of equipment (smartphones, toys etc.). The sleeping area measures 2.4m x 2.4m, allowing plenty of room for sleeping mats for a family (two adults and two children) as well as other pieces of gear.

Packing the tent away, once mastered, is worry free, and it packs down into a compact lightweight size which doesn’t take up much space. It even comes with a durable zipped storage bag with handles for easy access and transportation.

The tent is very well built with an excellent finish (no loose threads or material), and additional reinforcing material was evident at potential stress points, leading us to have no doubt that the tent would last for years.

In our opinion, the Fusion 400 is a fantastically practical tent for family use, which simply pops up into position for instant convenience without skimping on features or quality.

BAD POINTS: The design of the front porch (as with a lot of smaller tents) means that if there is driving rain the door will have to stay shut to protect any gear in the porch. Additionally for families with older and therefore larger children, the space in the inner tent might just be a bit too cosy - sitting room only. Additionally, putting the tent away can be quite difficult the first time, so it is definitely worth checking the video showing how to do this on the Outwell website.
